How Container Fill Volume Calculator Works?

The Container Fill Volume Calculator works in 3 steps.

  1. 1

Enter the net mass of the contents in kilograms (kg), with packaging weight removed.

  2. 2

Set the density of the contents, such as 0.832 kg/L for diesel or 1.42 kg/L for honey.

  3. 3

Read the filled volume in liters (L), then divide by the container capacity for the fill percentage.

Container Fill Volume Calculator Formula

The Container Fill Volume Calculator formula is:

Filled volume (L) = Contents mass (kg) ÷ Density (kg/L); Fill level (%) = Filled volume ÷ Capacity × 100

Free space (L) = Capacity (L) − Filled volume (L).

Worked example

15 kg of diesel in a 20 L jerrycan: 15 ÷ 0.832 = 18.03 L, a 90.1% fill with 1.97 L of free space.

Leave 5% to 10% headspace in sealed containers. Liquids such as petrol expand by about 1% for a 10 °C (18 °F) rise, and a brim-full container can leak or bulge.

Container Fill Volume Calculator Conversion Table

The Container Fill Volume Calculator table shows 6 containers, the mass of contents inside each one, the volume that mass fills and the fill percentage.

What is Container Fill Volume Calculator?

The Container Fill Volume Calculator is a tool that calculates the volume a known mass of contents fills inside a container. The tool answers 2 questions at once: how many liters are in the container, and what share of the capacity those liters use.

The calculator suits containers you can weigh but not see into, such as steel drums, opaque jerrycans and insulated tanks.

What are the uses of Container Fill Volume Calculator?

There are 4 main uses of the Container Fill Volume Calculator: stock checks, overfill prevention, transport rules and home fuel cans.

  • Stock checks

Warehouses weigh part-used drums to find liters remaining.

  • Overfill prevention

Filling teams confirm headspace before sealing containers.

  • Transport rules

Shippers check fill levels against dangerous-goods limits.

  • Home fuel cans

Owners weigh jerrycans to see how much fuel is left.

Container Fill Volume Calculator FAQ

How full is a 200 L drum holding 150 kg of olive oil?

The drum is about 81.7% full: 150 kg ÷ 0.918 kg/L = 163.4 L.

How much headspace should a container have?

Leave 5% to 10% headspace for most liquids, and more for fuels stored in heat.
