How Custom Density Converter Works?
The Custom Density Converter works in 3 steps.
- 1
Enter the mass in kilograms (kg) of the material you want to convert.
- 2
Type your own density in kg/L (identical to g/cm³) into the density box, or drag the slider between 0.0001 and 10 kg/L.
- 3
Copy the volume in liters (L) and note the division printed under the result for your records.
Custom Density Converter Formula
The Custom Density Converter formula is:
Volume (L) = Mass (kg) ÷ Custom density (kg/L)Convert a density in kg/m³ to kg/L first by dividing by 1,000, so 870 kg/m³ becomes 0.870 kg/L.
Worked example
40 kg of a coolant measured at 1.058 kg/L ÷ 1.058 = 37.81 L (9.99 US gal).
A density taken from a supplier's Safety Data Sheet (SDS) or Technical Data Sheet (TDS) gives a better result than a generic value. SDS densities are usually quoted at 20 °C (68 °F) or 15 °C (59 °F).
Custom Density Converter Conversion Table
The Custom Density Converter table shows the liters (L) produced by 8 masses at 6 entered densities from 0.6 kg/L to 2.0 kg/L.
| Mass (kg) | L at 0.6 kg/L | L at 0.8 kg/L | L at 1 kg/L | L at 1.2 kg/L | L at 1.5 kg/L | L at 2 kg/L |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1.667 | 1.25 | 1 | 0.8333 | 0.6667 | 0.5 |

What is Custom Density Converter?
The Custom Density Converter is a mass-to-volume calculator that uses a density value entered by the user instead of a preset substance. The tool accepts any positive density, from light foams near 0.05 kg/L to metals above 7 kg/L.
Custom densities come from 3 main sources: a product data sheet, a hydrometer or density meter reading, and a weighed sample of known volume. The converter treats all 3 the same way and divides the mass by the entered value.
What are the uses of Custom Density Converter?
There are 4 main uses of the Custom Density Converter: proprietary products, measured samples, unlisted chemicals and what-if checks.
Proprietary products
Manufacturers convert branded blends, coatings and cleaners with densities printed on their own data sheets.
Measured samples
Quality teams plug in a density from a same-day hydrometer test to convert a batch accurately.
Unlisted chemicals
Students and engineers convert compounds such as dichloromethane (1.33 kg/L) that standard lists skip.
What-if checks
Planners test how a 5% density change shifts tank volume before buying storage.
Custom Density Converter FAQ
Is kg/L the same as g/cm³?
Yes, 1 kg/L equals exactly 1 g/cm³ and 1 g/mL. A density of 0.92 g/cm³ goes into the converter as 0.92.
What density should I enter for an unknown liquid?
Enter a measured density: weigh 1 L (or 100 mL) of the liquid and divide the mass in kg by the volume in L.
