How Specific Gravity Converter Works?

The Specific Gravity Converter works in 3 steps.

  1. 1

Enter the mass in kilograms (kg) that needs a volume.

  2. 2

Type the specific gravity (SG) from the product label or hydrometer, for example 0.85 or 1.26.

  3. 3

Read the liters (L); the converter multiplies SG by the 1.000 kg/L water reference before dividing.

Specific Gravity Converter Formula

The Specific Gravity Converter formula is:

Volume (L) = Mass (kg) ÷ (Specific gravity × 1.000 kg/L)

Density (kg/L) = SG × reference density. With a 15.6 °C (60 °F) reference used in the petroleum trade, the reference is 0.999 kg/L.

Worked example

50 kg of a solution with SG 1.26 ÷ (1.26 × 1.000) = 39.68 L (10.48 US gal).

Specific gravity has no unit. An SG below 1 means the material floats on water; an SG above 1 means the material sinks.

Specific Gravity Converter Conversion Table

The Specific Gravity Converter table turns 13 specific gravity (SG) values into density in kg/L, kg/m³, lb/ft³ and lb per US gallon, plus the liters of 100 kg (220.5 lb) at each SG, using water at 4 °C (39.2 °F) as the 1.000 reference.

What is Specific Gravity Converter?

The Specific Gravity Converter is a calculator that converts mass to volume from a specific gravity (SG) reading instead of a density in kg/L. SG compares the density of a substance to the density of a reference, which is pure water for liquids and solids.

Water at 4 °C (39.2 °F) has a density of 1.000 kg/L, so the SG number equals the density in kg/L for most practical work. Brewers, battery technicians and chemical buyers read SG directly from hydrometers and data sheets, then convert to liters with this tool.

What are the uses of Specific Gravity Converter?

There are 4 main uses of the Specific Gravity Converter: brewing and winemaking, battery acid, chemical purchasing and mineral testing.

  • Brewing and winemaking

Brewers convert wort weight into liters using an original gravity reading such as 1.050.

  • Battery acid

Technicians size electrolyte volumes from an SG of 1.265 for charged lead-acid cells.

  • Chemical purchasing

Buyers turn a 1,000 kg order into liters from the SG on the supplier's data sheet.

  • Mineral testing

Geologists estimate sample volumes from SG values measured by water displacement.

Specific Gravity Converter FAQ

Is specific gravity the same as density?

No, specific gravity is a ratio without units, while density carries units such as kg/L. The 2 numbers match in kg/L when the reference is water at 4 °C.

What is the specific gravity of water?

The specific gravity of water is 1.000 at 4 °C (39.2 °F), and 0.998 at 20 °C (68 °F) against the 4 °C reference.
