How Temperature-Based Converter Works?
The Temperature-Based Converter works in 3 steps.
- 1
Enter the mass in kilograms (kg) of the liquid.
- 2
Set the density that matches the liquid temperature; the table below lists water from 0.99984 kg/L at 0 °C to 0.95835 kg/L at 100 °C.
- 3
Read the liters (L) at that temperature and compare the result with the 4 °C value to see thermal expansion.
Temperature-Based Converter Formula
The Temperature-Based Converter formula is:
Volume at T (L) = Mass (kg) ÷ Density at T (kg/L)For a liquid with a known expansion coefficient β, density at T ≈ ρ₀ ÷ (1 + β × (T − T₀)). Diesel has a β near 0.00083 per °C.
Worked example
100 kg of water at 80 °C (176 °F) ÷ 0.97182 kg/L = 102.9 L, which is 2.9 L more than at 4 °C.
Hot water fills more space than cold water of the same mass. 100 kg of water occupies 100.003 L at 4 °C and 104.35 L at 100 °C, a 4.3% increase.
Temperature-Based Converter Conversion Table
The Temperature-Based Converter table lists pure water density at 14 temperatures from 0 °C (32 °F) to 100 °C (212 °F), with the liters of 100 kg and the kilograms of 100 L at each temperature.

What is Temperature-Based Converter?
The Temperature-Based Converter is a mass-to-volume calculator that applies the density of a liquid at a selected temperature. Liquids expand when heated and contract when cooled, so 1 kg of a liquid fills a different number of liters at 10 °C (50 °F) than at 40 °C (104 °F).
Water reaches maximum density, 0.99997 kg/L, at about 4 °C (39.2 °F). Fuels change faster than water: petrol loses roughly 0.1% of its density for every 1 °C rise. Fuel terminals and labs correct volumes to a standard 15 °C (59 °F) for that reason.
What are the uses of Temperature-Based Converter?
There are 4 main uses of the Temperature-Based Converter: fuel delivery, heating systems, food processing and lab calibration.
Fuel delivery
Depots correct hot-loaded diesel to the 15 °C standard volume before invoicing.
Heating systems
Plumbers size expansion vessels from the extra liters water gains between 10 °C and 80 °C.
Food processing
Dairies convert milk mass to volume at the 4 °C storage temperature.
Lab calibration
Technicians calibrate glassware by weighing water and dividing by the density at room temperature.
Temperature-Based Converter FAQ
Does temperature change the weight of 1 liter?
Yes, 1 liter of a warm liquid weighs less than 1 liter of the same cold liquid. 1 L of water weighs 0.99997 kg at 4 °C and 0.95835 kg at 100 °C.
What temperature gives water a density of exactly 1 kg/L?
Water comes closest to 1 kg/L at 4 °C (39.2 °F), with a density of 0.99997 kg/L.
