How Conversion Uncertainty Calculator Works?
The Conversion Uncertainty Calculator works in 3 steps.
- 1
Enter the mass in kilograms (kg) and the nominal density in kg/L.
- 2
Set the density uncertainty as a percentage, for example ± 0.5% for a hydrometer reading.
- 3
Read the volume range and the ± liters; the table shows 6 uncertainty levels for 1,000 kg of diesel.
Conversion Uncertainty Calculator Formula
The Conversion Uncertainty Calculator formula is:
Relative volume uncertainty ≈ √((u_m)² + (u_ρ)²)u_m is the relative mass uncertainty and u_ρ is the relative density uncertainty; with an exact mass, the volume uncertainty equals the density uncertainty.
Worked example
1,000 kg of diesel at 0.832 kg/L ± 1% gives 1,201.9 L ± 12.0 L (± 3.18 US gal).
A scale accurate to ± 0.1% and a density known to ± 0.5% give a combined volume uncertainty of ± 0.51%. The density term dominates in most kg-to-liter conversions.
Conversion Uncertainty Calculator Conversion Table
The Conversion Uncertainty Calculator table shows how 6 levels of density uncertainty change the volume of 1,000 kg (2,204.6 lb) of diesel at a nominal 0.832 kg/L (nominal volume 1,201.9 L).
| Density uncertainty | Density range (kg/L) | Volume range (L) | Volume uncertainty (± L) | Volume uncertainty (± US gal) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ± 0.1% | 0.8312 – 0.8328 | 1,200.7 – 1,203.1 | 1.2 | 0.32 |
| ± 0.25% | 0.8299 – 0.8341 | 1,198.9 – 1,204.9 | 3 | 0.79 |
| ± 0.5% | 0.8278 – 0.8362 | 1,195.9 – 1,208 | 6.01 | 1.59 |
| ± 1% | 0.8237 – 0.8403 | 1,190 – 1,214.1 | 12.02 | 3.18 |
| ± 2% | 0.8154 – 0.8486 | 1,178.4 – 1,226.5 | 24.05 | 6.35 |
| ± 5% | 0.7904 – 0.8736 | 1,144.7 – 1,265.2 | 60.25 | 15.92 |
What is Conversion Uncertainty Calculator?
The Conversion Uncertainty Calculator is a tool that attaches a measurement margin to a mass-to-volume result. Every density has a measurement uncertainty, and the uncertainty flows straight into the calculated volume.
The calculator follows the root-sum-square method from the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM). Independent errors in mass and density combine as the square root of the sum of their squares.
What are the uses of Conversion Uncertainty Calculator?
There are 4 main uses of the Conversion Uncertainty Calculator: custody transfer, lab reports, instrument choice and loss investigations.
Custody transfer
Fuel and chemical traders state volume tolerances in sale contracts.
Lab reports
Analysts report volumes with a ± margin for accreditation audits.
Instrument choice
Engineers decide whether a hydrometer or a digital density meter meets the tolerance.
Loss investigations
Operators check whether a stock difference sits inside measurement error.
Conversion Uncertainty Calculator FAQ
How does density uncertainty affect volume?
A ± 1% density uncertainty creates about a ± 1% volume uncertainty when the mass is known exactly.
What density uncertainty does a digital density meter give?
A laboratory digital density meter gives about ± 0.0001 g/cm³, near ± 0.01% for water-like liquids.
