How Density Range Calculator Works?

The Density Range Calculator works in 3 steps.

  1. 1

Enter the mass in kilograms (kg).

  2. 2

Run the conversion at the lowest density for the maximum volume, then at the highest density for the minimum volume.

  3. 3

Subtract the 2 results to see the volume spread, as shown for 9 materials in the table.

Density Range Calculator Formula

The Density Range Calculator formula is:

Max volume (L) = Mass ÷ Min density; Min volume (L) = Mass ÷ Max density

Volume spread (L) = Max volume − Min volume.

Worked example

100 kg of petrol at 0.720 to 0.775 kg/L fills between 129.03 L and 138.89 L, a 9.86 L spread.

Fuel standards set the range. EN 590 diesel ranges from 0.820 to 0.845 kg/L at 15 °C, and EN 228 petrol from 0.720 to 0.775 kg/L.

Density Range Calculator Conversion Table

The Density Range Calculator table gives the minimum and maximum volume of 100 kg (220.5 lb) for 9 materials across each material's published density range.

What is Density Range Calculator?

The Density Range Calculator is a tool that calculates the lowest and highest volume a mass can occupy across a density range. Natural and blended products never hold one exact density: honey varies with water content, sand with moisture and fuels with blend and season.

A range result is safer than a single figure for purchasing and storage. Size tanks and containers to the maximum volume, and quote stock to the minimum volume.

What are the uses of Density Range Calculator?

There are 4 main uses of the Density Range Calculator: tank sizing, contract tolerances, quality limits and risk reports.

  • Tank sizing

Engineers size storage for the largest volume a mass can reach.

  • Contract tolerances

Buyers set acceptable delivery volumes for fuel and chemicals sold by weight.

  • Quality limits

Food producers flag batches that fall outside the normal density band.

  • Risk reports

Auditors show the volume uncertainty behind inventory figures.

Density Range Calculator FAQ

Why does fuel density vary?

Fuel density varies with crude source, refinery blend, additives and temperature. Diesel stays within 0.820 to 0.845 kg/L under the EN 590 standard.

Which density gives the largest volume?

The lowest density gives the largest volume for the same mass.
