How Density Unit Converter Works?
The Density Unit Converter works in 3 steps.
- 1
Enter a density in kilograms per liter (kg/L); a density in g/cm³ or g/mL goes in unchanged.
- 2
Read the matching kg/m³, lb/ft³ and lb/US gal values from the conversion table.
- 3
Use the kg/L result in any converter on the site, or copy the imperial value for a US or UK data sheet.
Density Unit Converter Formula
The Density Unit Converter formula is:
1 kg/L = 1 g/cm³ = 1 g/mL = 1,000 kg/m³ = 62.428 lb/ft³ = 8.3454 lb/US gal1 kg/L = 10.0224 lb/Imp gal = 0.036127 lb/in³. Divide a kg/m³ value by 1,000 to get kg/L.
Worked example
Diesel at 832 kg/m³ = 0.832 kg/L = 51.94 lb/ft³ = 6.943 lb/US gal.
Gas densities are usually quoted in g/L or kg/m³, and the 2 units are equal. Air at 15 °C (59 °F) has a density of 1.225 kg/m³, which is 1.225 g/L or 0.001225 kg/L.

What is Density Unit Converter?
The Density Unit Converter is a tool that expresses one density value in 6 metric and imperial units. Metric data sheets use kg/m³ or g/cm³, US fuel and chemical sheets use lb/gal, and engineering handbooks use lb/ft³.
The conversion factors are fixed: 1 lb equals 0.45359237 kg, 1 US gallon equals 3.785411784 L and 1 ft³ equals 28.3168 L. The converter applies those exact factors, so the result carries no rounding from the density itself.
What are the uses of Density Unit Converter?
There are 4 main uses of the Density Unit Converter: data sheet translation, structural loads, fuel trading and exam practice.
Data sheet translation
Engineers turn lb/gal figures on US product sheets into kg/L for metric calculations.
Structural loads
Designers convert kg/m³ material densities into lb/ft³ for imperial load tables.
Fuel trading
Traders compare kg/m³ terminal densities with lb/US gal delivery documents.
Exam practice
Physics students check unit conversions between g/cm³ and kg/m³.
Density Unit Converter FAQ
How do I convert kg/m³ to kg/L?
Divide the kg/m³ value by 1,000. A density of 920 kg/m³ equals 0.920 kg/L.
How many pounds per gallon is 1 kg/L?
1 kg/L equals 8.3454 lb per US gallon and 10.0224 lb per Imperial gallon.
