Mixture Mass-to-Volume Calculator
Turn kg of a finished mix into liters. This tool uses the density of the final mix, not the density of each ingredient.

How Mixture Mass-to-Volume Calculator Works?
The Mixture Mass-to-Volume Calculator works in 3 steps.
- 1
Enter the mass in kilograms (kg) of the finished mixture.
- 2
Set the final mixture density, measured or taken from the table, such as 1.10 kg/L for mixed epoxy.
- 3
Read the liters (L) the finished mix fills.
Mixture Mass-to-Volume Calculator Formula
The Mixture Mass-to-Volume Calculator formula is:
Volume (L) = Mixture mass (kg) ÷ Final mixture density (kg/L)Ideal estimate: 1 ÷ ρ_mix = w₁ ÷ ρ₁ + w₂ ÷ ρ₂, where w is the mass fraction of each ingredient.
Worked example
10 kg of simple sugar syrup at 1.23 kg/L = 8.13 L.
Real mixtures shrink. 50 mL of ethanol plus 50 mL of water makes about 96 mL, not 100 mL, so a measured final density gives the correct volume.
Mixture Mass-to-Volume Calculator Conversion Table
The Mixture Mass-to-Volume Calculator table lists 8 common mixtures, the final density of each mixture and the volume of 10 kg (22 lb) of the finished mix.
| Mixture | Mix ratio | Final density (kg/L) | Volume of 10 kg (L) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Epoxy resin + hardener | 2 : 1 by mass | 1.1 | 9.091 |
| Antifreeze + water | 50 : 50 by volume | 1.07 | 9.346 |
| Sugar syrup (simple) | 1 : 1 sugar to water by mass | 1.23 | 8.13 |
| Sugar syrup (rich) | 2 : 1 sugar to water by mass | 1.33 | 7.519 |
| Brine | 10% salt by mass | 1.07 | 9.346 |
| Saturated brine | 26% salt by mass | 1.2 | 8.333 |
| Mortar | 1 : 4 cement to sand | 2.1 | 4.762 |
| Concrete | 1 : 2 : 3 cement, sand, gravel | 2.3 | 4.348 |
Mixture density rarely equals the average of the ingredient densities, so the measured final density gives the correct volume.
What is Mixture Mass-to-Volume Calculator?
The Mixture Mass-to-Volume Calculator is a tool that converts the mass of a blended product into volume with the density of the final mixture. Dissolving sugar or salt, or reacting resin with hardener, changes the volume in ways a simple average misses.
The sample table lists 8 mixtures with a ratio and a final density each. Measure the density of your own blend with a hydrometer or by weighing a known volume.
What are the uses of Mixture Mass-to-Volume Calculator?
There are 4 main uses of the Mixture Mass-to-Volume Calculator: epoxy projects, syrup production, brine preparation and concrete and mortar.
Epoxy projects
Makers convert a mixed resin mass into liters to fill a mold or river table.
Syrup production
Cafés and bottlers convert syrup batches from kilograms into liters.
Brine preparation
Food plants and road crews convert salt-water batches to tank volumes.
Concrete and mortar
Builders estimate the liters a mixed batch fills in a form or bucket.
Mixture Mass-to-Volume Calculator FAQ
Can I average ingredient densities for a mixture?
No, averaging ingredient densities gives an estimate only. Mixtures such as alcohol and water shrink when combined, so measure the final density.
What is the density of 50/50 antifreeze?
A 50/50 mix of ethylene glycol antifreeze and water has a density of about 1.07 kg/L at 20 °C (68 °F).
